"Competitions give children who wait the entire year for the recital more opportunities to perform. The experience fosters dedication, perseverance and social interaction, and prepares dancers for adult professionalism... in or away from dance." ~ Dance Magazine
UTDS’s Competitive Dance Teams are Nationally recognized for their outstanding choreography, technique, and performance style. These dance teams compete and perform across the U.S. and they have won hundreds of Regional and National titles, Highest Over-All Score awards, Best Choreography awards, Most Entertaining Routine awards, Studio Sportsmanship awards and thousands of dollars in cash and prize. In 2007, UTDS’s Competition Teams won the Dance Maker’s, Inc. Highest Over-All Score at the National Dance Championship and in 2009, they won the Dance Maker's , Inc. "Judges Choice Award" and $800 cash at the National Dance Championship. These students have performed at Walt Disney World, on the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, the Goombay Festival in the Bahamas, on some of the top college dance teams, the New York City Rockette Experience, the Miss SC and Miss SC Teen Pageants, and many televised events. The team members attend workshops and conventions to further expand their dance education and they have studied dance from some of the country’s top dance professionals including Frank Hatchett, Barry Lather, Al Gilbert, Debbie Dee, Steven Boyd, Janice Barringer, and Dena Rizzo to name a few.
However, being a member of UTDS’s Competition Team is not all about winning the 1st place trophy. It’s much more than that. As a member of the competition team, students learn about teamwork, dedication, commitment, and sportsmanship. They will not only develop self-confidence and self-esteem, but they will also learn how to respect other dancers and studios for their abilities. The competition circuit is a great place for dancers to learn how to compete in a positive environment and to receive constructive feedback from top notch dance professionals. We want the competition experience of each one of our team members to be a fun and positive one that will help them grow and develop into a well-rounded young adult.
